Experience shows that religious periodicals that avoid doctrinal controversy and pious devotional material can often, initially, influence unchurched people more effectively than personal contacts. THE LUTHERAN DIGEST, as an OUTREACH MINISTRY TOOL, avoids hardcore doctrinal issues not only for this reason but also in the belief that the respective synods, via their official publications, are the unquestioned authorities to address church doctrine and theology issues. The book, then, is complementary, not competitive, to the synodical publications. Thousands of churches served and dozens of favorable pastor comments received annually testify to THE LUTHERAN DIGEST's acceptance in the Lutheran Church body.

The originally intended, and continued best, use of THE LUTHERAN DIGEST is as a "leave behind" item by pastors or lay persons performing outreach ministry. As an alternative, however, THE LUTHERAN DIGEST copies, upon their arrival at a participating church, can be stamped or labeled with the pastor's name, church name, address, phone, and worship hours and distributed to the congregation for its reading enjoyment. When the next issue arrives...perhaps with a bulletin announcement...the congregation can be encouraged to place their previous issue copies with new neighbors or in waiting areas of health, grooming, laundry and repair facilities. The key is to get the books out where unchurched people are likely to see them and, through circumstances, want to read them. Eventually, those same readers may choose to attend the services of the participating church...where personal contact can ultimately take over.

LUTHERAN DIGEST copies are delivered in bulk, (usually) free of charge to participating Lutheran churches. Funding comes from local advertising procured by DIGEST sales agents from the business communities surrounding the participating churches. These local sponsorships are printed on separate inserts and stitched into the center of the copies for distribution back into the communities through the participating Lutheran churches of those communities.

Principal LUTHERAN DIGEST distribution is to the Great Lakes, Upper Midwest and Great Plains States of the United States of America. No direct distribution of church bulk shipments is made outside the contiguous 48 states. Click on map to see principle distribution area.
