In
1953, the first-edition Chevrolet Corvette rolled off an assembly line
in
Flint, Mich. Over the years, it became a favorite of car enthusiasts due
to its
innovative sleek design and powerful engine. That same year, another
innovative inaugural edition rolled off a Minnesota press: the first
issue of The
Lutheran Digest.
From the beginning, The Lutheran Digest was meant as a
tool to be left
behind after a pastor visited shut-in, elderly or hospitalized
parishioners. The
most effective use today is still in a congregation’s outreach ministry.
By
labeling each Lutheran Digest copy with its name, address and phone
number,
a church promotes its good name and standing wherever the magazine
circulates throughout the community.
If you receive your Lutheran Digest copy through your
church, chances are
it’s due to the benevolence of your local businesses. By purchasing
advertising
sponsorships, these businesses provide the support that keeps The
Lutheran
Digest coming free of charge to your congregation. While giving each
congregation the opportunity to obtain these sponsorships for themselves
would be ideal, logistically that has not proven practical.
Instead, The Lutheran Digest uses agents who travel
town to town and act as
temporary representatives for partnering congregations. These agents are
homemakers, farmers, factory and office workers, retirees—people from all
walks of life. Maybe even you, if you’re interested. (To learn more, just
complete and mail the “Income Opportunity” card between pages 16 and 17
in
this book.)
Like the Corvette, we’ve made some changes since 1953.
Recently, you
may have noticed our bright new covers. But the engine that drives our
magazine—uplifting and inspirational reading—remains unchanged.
You can help promote your church’s good standing in a
community by
placing Lutheran Digest copies...
... at a sister church;
... in nursing home chapels and reading rooms;
... with home healthcare or hospice services;
... in waiting rooms at medical facilities;
... at senior day-care centers;b
... at homeless/abuse shelters;
... at food shelves;
... in Laundromats;
... with military chaplains; and
... any place people wait
